How do you pull apart a fish tank?

I have been looking for a 40L and can not find one. I found a cracked 55 for $10 and was going to cut the glass down for a 40L and replace a panel. I belive the are all siliconed into the trim, right? Is there a way to actuall get them apart without breaking them?

If so, what special tools would I need or how do I go about doing it?

Razor blade and elbow grease (a lot of both). The best is to use a flat blade razor (scraper) and remove all the inside silicone first. After that it is just a matter of digging out the silicone in the seams. What you are doing sounds like a lot of work and you will still not end up with the 40B since the 55g is not nearly as wide.

Well, he didn't say 40B, he said 40L. The only one I ever saw I bought for $25 from someone getting out of the hobby. I like it because it has the same foot print as a 55 but is not as tall.

As for disassembly, very very carefully. Be careful removing the trim, the glass is not always polished under there, it can be jagged and/or sharp and could cut you.

I need a 45 Long, and, the only one around is $100+. I offered the guy $45 but never heard from him. I already have a 35 running and working fine, so, this is more of a luxury than anything else. If I can Frankenstein one for $25 then so be it. A side panel and having the glass company snap the other pieces into 17" tall cant be that much?

Yea, would rather just buy a 40 long though.
