i bought a used tank and when i cleaned it all up i found a tag that siad all glass aquarium and the date it was made which was 1988 so i want to take and re do the silicone on the inside becuase it peels a way pretty easy how do i do this with out ruining the integraty of the tank?

there are a few threads around on it but the jist of it is you have to first remove the upper and lower trim braces without breaking them, then cut all the silicone out and clean it with alchohol, thus giving you 5 panes of glass. Now you will rebuild the tank and use fresh silicone. It can be done but If it where me Id look around for a newer tank instead. The price of new tanks is not all that bad, or you should be able to find a used one locally that is not that old. See if you ahve a local reef club or talk to local stores and see if anyone has mentioned selling a used setup. If you do redo it be sure to take pics of the process and keep us posted on your journey.

once you have the 5 separate panes, I would remove as much as possible with a knife. Then use a silicone solvent to remove the old residual silicone before resiliconing the tank together.

Just clean as much of the old silicone off from the inside, clean the glass and re-caulk with Aquarium silicone. No need to take apart the tank if all you want to do is re-seal the inside.

As to removing the bracing, that's what I'm in the process of doing right now. I found that using a utility knife first and running around all the edges, both inside and out, and then using a metal putty knife to break the seal all the way to the edge of the plastic is working wonders for me. PM if you have any questions... we're in this together! hahaha (dropped a steel framing square on the bottom of my new 120)
