I trying to get a better idea how everyone runs there carbon if any......Right now I using a Phosban Reactor.....but looking for something a bit bigger.....do we have any DIY models out there,,,,,,,,I beat Manny has something,,,,,,let me know
TIA
Brian

I currentely run it in a mesh bag inside a chamber in my proteim skimmer, I use to run it in a large fluidize reactor before and worked fine.
I stoped using the reactor because I am using ozone and the protein skimmer chamber is a better way to get rid of residual ozone for me.
I still have two of the deltec fluidize reactors, if you want one i will give you a good price, let me know.

I went low tech on mine. Bought bridal viel material with my then fiance, what better execuse to walk into Michaels? Take carbon, place on viel, rubber band it close, run under water for a bit to get rid of dust and placed in the sump near the input from overflow. No gadgets, no additional heat.

How long is carbon good for??

How long is carbon good for??

Not to steal the thread, but I as well just use the bag method in one of the baffles in my sump.

My question is, how can you tell when its time to change the carbon.

I have read that carbon is only effective in the 1st 48 hours of use. You get about 85% of what it is going to do in that time frame. The efficiency drops way off after that but I don't think it hurts to leave it in after that. It shouldn't leach anything back into the system. Running it once a month is plenty of use unless you need to remove known toxins like corals reacting to a "sand storm" or medical treatments.

Let me know if anyone has heard otherwise...

Most people change it out monthly. I'm going to change it out every few months because I believe that by it being in a phosban fluidized reactor, I'll get better performance and usage out of it, to draw out those last few clean spots in the carbon. I'm probably wrong in my belief, but that's okay, I'll forgive me.

IMO, the carbon is more effective in the reactor, but on the same token it will exhaust that much more quicker, I think that if you use a reactor you should change every couple of weeks and alternate with some phosphate remover media, this media will last a little longer than the charcoal.

What brand of carbon are you guys running? I have used Chemipure. Hard to tell if anything benefits. I just know that everything stays healthy. Which is what you want anyway...

Im running Black Diamond carbon in my Phosban Reactor, and a bag of chemipure between the sump baffles. Change the carbon about every two weeks and the Chemipure once a month
