I recently bought an RO/DI unit but haven't installed it yet. I'm debating where to put it. The bathroom is closer to the tanks, but the kitchen seems a more logical place. I would like to use it for drinking water also, and since I have 2 tanks I don't think hooking it up directly to one makes sense. What are your opinions?

you technically could split the output hose and run one to each tank with a manual float switch and then have a third hose for your drinking water.
Josh

If you choose to use this for drinking water split the supply before the DI and drink the RO water. It is generally not a good idea to drink DI water.

Neither direct to the tank (too risky) nor drinking (good enough tap)
Ouput to reservoir tank with auto top off feeding the Kalk reactor and for transfer to mixing tank. Also direct to mixing tank.
Including dual membrane (1/2 waste twice capacity), auto purge, auto flush and booster pump.

Pedro,

You pickup the AWI Compact Reefkeeper RO/DI? And if so let me know if it your output with south florida water is at zero on your tds meter. When you get it up and runing. I am looking at the that unit because size limitations in my laundry room? I could make room but that means moving shelves which are anchored into concrete too much work. Thanks,

I have the unit that Pedro bought and Yes the TDS is zero on the West Pemboke Pines water that I have.

At this point it looks like a DI Bypass for the drinking water (jd I wouldn't drink the local water if I were you) and 3/8" tubing running to both tanks (like the rest of jd's post). The biggest obstacle is running the tubing. I hate to think of crawling around in my ceiling in the summertime. Does anybody have experience with this and how do you get the tubing down the wall???

Currently I have 6 gallon buckets with Kalk and an ATO to control topoff. I suppose I could just keep that setup and put RO float switches in the buckets to keep them filled.

i manually filter my water, meaning i watch it or give it a few hrs to fill up. i've forgotten about it once of twice and a few puddles. YIKES! i've been thinking about hooking it up to a separate tank with a floater valve but then i have no room for it.

I do the same

OK, so does anyone know somebody with experience with installation (you know, the crawling around in the ceiling part)? I'm getting a bit old for that stuff. If it's a pro, somebody cheap. If you're volunteering, all the beer and wings (or whatever you prefer) you can eat.

BTW, nice rig davester.

Drinking RO/DI water:

I wouldn't drink it straight from the hose but by the time that it sit's in a resorvoir and interacts with the air or you make your coffee with it, it isn't DI water anymore anyway.

Nothing wrong with drinking it.

Just a side note. It is not recommended to store RO water to be used for drinking. As it has been stripped from the desinfectants it can easily develop microogranisms that will make it not suitable for consumption.

OK, free Xenia (as much as you can scrape off my glass) to anyone who wants to help with the install. :D

jd, I was thinking of getting a small storage tank under the sink for drinking. I'm thinking if we use it for water (2 people, 3 large dogs) and coffee it shouldn't be sitting around for very long.

Chris, that's another option. At first I figured I'd just fill my current water containers from the RO/DI as needed then fill my reservoirs. I would prefer to eliminate the lugging of water jugs altogether, though. For water changes, I've got a 50 gallon container I got from Ty which I fill up at the LFS. I suppose I could mix my own, but it's seems like more trouble than going to my "home away from home". Besides, that way I get to see all the new stuff that just came in.

BTW, I don't have a garage (carport). 500 gallon tank, where the heck do you park your car, Chris?

The cars stay in the driveway. It sure is nice knowing I have a lot of water if ever need it.
