The reactor is filled with reactor media. Tank water is circulated in the reactor and CO2 is slowly added. The addition of CO2 causes the pH in the reactor to drop. The water inside the reactor becomes acidic and dissolves the reactor media. This dissolved media is dripped into the tank to maintain calcium and carbonate.
The reactor media is basically crushed coral or aragonite (calcium sand) so when you lower the pH (acidic) it slowly disolves the media and adds the disolved calcium to the tank.
If it is set up correctly and dialed in it should not alter the pH much. Dual chamber reactors use the second chamber to balance the pH before it enters the sump.
