thats really an old myth. all the clams we keep are most commonly found up on the reef, some clams can be found on the sand but this is really an exception to the rule.
what you really need to worry about is the lighting you have. if your lighting is strong enough to reach the bottom and you want your clams on the sand fine but there is nothing wrong with placing whatever type clam up on the rocks
