How far are your lights above the water??

I have some T5 lights over my 90 gal tank and they are about 3-4 inches max above the water. I think this might be why I am getting some red on my sand. I am thinking of making a new canopy to get the lights like 6-7 inches above the water.

Anyone have any suggestions? Do you think this is a good idea or bad idea?

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Tony

t-5 lights can be close to the water. Red on your sand is cyano bacteria. If your bulbs are new that isn't the cause of your cyano issue. Water quality is off some how

Ok I have been doing weekly water changes but still seem to get some red on my sand and also some on my zoas which causes them not to open?? I cant figure it out. My salt is fine Ill have to run some tests tonight.

What kind of sand did you use? Home depot stuff? Sometimes thats the issue
Silicate sand can release silcates into the water that cyano feeds on

My skimmer is the main cause im sure its a berlin xl skimmer I should be getting a new one next week. I think im gonna leave the lights where they are you can see updated pictures in my post.

my lights are around 3-4" like yours, no red sand here. + 1 on the flow. I've got around 1500gph in 40g breeder, good flow and no sand storms.
