80-82 is fine as is 76-78,. The main thing is to keep it constant and if it does change do it SLOWLY. I would bring the water temp back down slowly also. First correct whatever took the temp up then I'd just allow a fan to run over the surface of the water to slowly bring the temp back down. It won't take that long if the ambient air is normal room temps.
I had a problem like that since I livein one of the hottest cities in America. I was told to keep the lids up if you can. Let their be some evaporation. Maybe this can also help.
I run mine between 80-82. You will get many many different opinions. I said to 82 just so you don't lower to much in a short time. At 83 your past any danger zone.
In the winter my tank is between 76.5 & maybe 79
In the summer it runs between maybe 79 on a cool day & 85 on a hot day - before I turn AC on
I have registered 86 as a high...never bothered with Ice - just a fan or two. I have a hood, so I also raise the hood up to let heat out
