Well, I HAD this crab... knew where he lived, and kept a close eye on him from the beginning (6 months)
His Rock was at the bottom of the rock pile, and unmovable
I watched him molting, getting larger... he started getting less and less shy. Ive been trying to catch him for about 2 months, glasses, inverted coke bottles, lureing with food. all i caught were hermits and frustration
here he is about 2 1/2 months ago.
well, 3 i watched him pull a rather large snail in his cave and eat it. bugger i thought. yesterday... a hermit crab met its death. ( i used to feed the crab but since im trying to catch it with food i stopped)
Yesterday I got a half in baby maroon. hes in QT but I worried about this crab killing him. So I put a huge piece of formula 2 (with gel binder so it wouldent float) In its cave. I let him eat awhile. I dident want to lose anymore cleaners. After a few hours he was very comfy and I could see him from his hole, he still was eating and dident look to be paying attention.
I boiled some water... Filled my turkeybaster and blasted him.... twice.
A few minutes ago a hermit pulled out one of his arms that has the pincher claw on it. thats arm (the shortest arm) was a little over a half inch!!!!
they'll be eatting him for dinner tonight
It might sound crazy, it might sound mean. But I know people are losing corals and small fishes all the time to these buggers and just wanted to let you know of another method that worked.
I have no sump or refugium, so he would have met his death either way. I feel better knowing hes gone. But i did enjoy his presence while cycling my first marine tank.
