how i solved my pygmy angel picking on my clams!
well,
after several months of having my cute little multicolor angel in my main 180g reef...he started to nip at my clam's mantle.
at first, i noticed they did not open...so i thought, 'great, thery are all going to die!' after all, it is pretty hard to save a declining clam...let alone three.
i then see marty (my multi's name) nipping at the mantles....great, let's see if i can catch this little rocket! after several days with a net and a trap set with food. nothing was working after three days and my clams did not open for this long. very, very bad for clams!!!
so, i look at my remote dsb and go, 'hmm, if i rig up a light over it...i can put the clams in there until i catch little marty.
so, after an hour with my crude hand tools and totally spare pieces of wood and left over screws from who knows what...i put together this very, very crude light stand. the light is a 400w magnetic ballast (from my old 125g reef now fowlr in the office) and the bulb is ushio se 10k. it lights up the entire garage and i am pretty sure i am going to get the police knocking on my door pretty soon wondering why my house has such an interesting 'glow'!!!
the clams opened within 2 minutes of being placed in their new sanctuary! beats me how they know that it is safe to open up.
i wanted to put them in my 29g zoo since all i use for my reefs is mh (the only way to go) but it does not have a chiller nor calcium supplementation. so, with the 6 degree temp swings during the course of the day, i was pretty sure that they would not make it for very long.
the clams are now 'happy as a clam' in their new home. it might be their permanent home but i love how beautiful they are and would miss them in the main display...
the top clam is a gigas, the one on the left is a blue green teardrop maxima and the one on the right is either a maxima or squamous. hard to tell but my guess is a maxima...it doesnt have the more complex center swirl pattern that squamous' seem to have.
