How is the Pulse mode supposed to work? (Also driver version)

Ok two questions, I went out and bought another Vortech, this time they only had the wireless version of the driver, fine by me. However I seem to recall hearing some driver updates, and I'm curious if there's a way to tell the driver without doing anything radical.

Now I have a wireless driver coming to me, and from what I understand this will be the newer driver. I read someplace that drivers can update other drivers wirelessly? Is this still the case? And if so is this an automatic thing where I don't need to do anything special?

Finally. Pulse mode.

How exactly do I set the frequency? Here's what I did as per the instructions.
Pressed the darker button until I got pulse mode, it turned blue.
Maxed the pump speed, then dialed back a bit and held the lighter button (set) waiting for it to blink... I held it for 10 seconds and it still didn't blink, so fine whatever.
I pressed the set button again "to change the frequency I thought" and it entered into pulse mode(i.e. actually pulsing) however upon pressing the set button again it stopped doing the pulse, the led was still blue.

Now am I missing something here with a step or something?

To operate pulse mode do NOT hold the set button for 10 seconds. After you hit the mode button to get into pulse mode as indicated by the blue LED adjust the dial for desired speed. Then hit the set button (DO NOT HOLD) and then use the dial to set the pulse frequency.
