how long do you keep your uv sterilizers on for?

I'm thinking of adding one to my system and read that some reefers turn them off at night because of the beneficial life that tends to come out then.

But then again, ick tends to come out then too...

24/7 for me. I understand turning the light on and off will shorten the life of the bulb.
