how long does it take?

After the first week or two of this so called diatom algea bloom how long does it take to go away. What are some steps to hurry it along?

Diatoms occur because of high phosphates. Normal for a cycle. Water changes are the best way but the addition of phosban cycles to your filter will deffintaley help as well.

do you have fish in the tank while it's cycling? If so, you should take them out and return them. The Ammonia will burn their gills, or it could kill them. It's also not really humane to cycle with fish. I would remove them ASAP, and take them back for store credit, or you could have your LFS hold them for you until your cycle is over.....

Good Luck.

Where to start...

To directly answer your question: When cycling, without fish, the algae blooms usually take 2-3 weeks (in my experience) to go away.

Other details: Having fish prematurely interferes with length of time it takes for a tank to establish itself. Those three fish you have in your tank description-- if they're all in there-- generate a lot of waste. If the 85 pounds of rock you added is good healthy rock, then you probably won't hurt too bad.

I think the gut reaction from everyone here is that you have the words 'new tank' and 'fish' in the same post. It's far easier (and wiser) to add fish slowly. If those fish are in there and you have any amount of ammonia or nitrite, get the fish out. If you have zero ammonia and nitrite, and you just have a lot of nitrate and phosphate, then make sure your refugium is running properly and growing macroalgae. Then do weekly water changes to combat the phosphate. If the water changes drop the phosphate levels, then you know it's just your tank adjusting. If the water changes do nothing to lower your phosphate, then start to look at a phosban reactor. My initial reaction is that you don't need one at this point.

Good luck.

I have checked the ammonia and the nitrates they are all okay within the required numbers? So what am i doing wrong? my tank is in its third month

Of course my (lfs) said sure as long as the tanks numbers are okay put them in there. They haven't been acting crazy? I also have snails, an emerald crab, five hermit crabs. Yup the (lfs) said they would clean up the brown algea.

If your specs are good, dont worry about it.They will go away with time.Get a cleanup crew and sit back and relax. Clean your glass with a mag float every day.

Yes I have a 120 super skimmer works great! Two rio 1400ul
powerheads i added three days ago thanks to someone on this forum.

Well, if they're eating everything you give them they're probably letting it exit on the other side as well. :D

Odds are you just need to relax an wait.

What kind of snails do you have and how many?

Not a bad idea to have a few turbo snails (in tank your size, maybe 10) and then 30 or so astreas would be good.

I agree, just get your self a good cleanup crew, and let them do the heavy lifting. :D

Feed your fish mysis instead of brine because brine is like junk food, not very good for your fish.

whats tds?

if you don't know what TDS means, then we already know you use tap water :)

TDS = Total Disolved Solids

Tapwater is very high in TDS but it all depends on what city you live in. RO/DI water has zero TDS and this is what you should use for a reef setup.

This may be the reason for your algee issues.
