how long have you kept a clam?

The longest survivor of any of your individual clams? Which kind? How big?

Well I know most will have some much older than mine, however I have a gold Squamosa that is reaching 5 years old now, and still growing.

I kept a squamosa clam for 8 years and then gave it to my friend who now has had it over 2 years.

It can shoot water from the bottom of a 20" barebottom tank, out the top, and onto the wall. Dangerous clam!

When I gave it to my friend 2 years ago, it was wedging between the front and back of my 55 gallon tank, so from end to end, it was at least 13" long.

I asked my friend today how the clam was doing and he said it's now 2 cigar ashtrays. It died the other week after having fallen victim to bristle worms. Personally, I think the worms were probably attracted to the clam since it was experiencing a slow decline over the last couple of months, but who knows. The bristle worms were the really small red kind.

I wonder if there's a trend toward bimodal distribution- people getting in and out early on, but a small spike who manage to hang on to their clams for years- which might reflect reefkeeping in general?

I voted for 3 - 5 years but mine is still alive and doing great...So I hope to be one of the 10years plus one day.

I picked up my baby ultra maxima back on december the 6th of 03...so that makes the little guy a little over 8 months in my tank thus far...

Hey ScubaDog, how big was he when you got him, has he grown in the past 8 months?

Id say It was an inch and a half when I got the clam, now its probally 2 to 21/4 inch clam....I would not hesitate to get more baby max's , but I will wait till my new system is up and running first....

Suppose it's time to close the poll...interesting #s; makes me want to commit to hanging on to mine - like have a tank in the retirement home; put them in my will, pass them down like 200 lb. heirlooms. Really, i can see it happening.......
