How long to separate fish

I added a couple of fish in an eggcrate box into my main tank. The thought is to see if anyone attacks them. So far, nothing. How long should I leave them there to see if it will be safe to release them from the eggcrate?

What fish are you putting in and what fish already are there, plus how big is the tank. 2-3 days should be enough unless you have aggressive fish like tangs there already, in which case it will be safer to wait a week.
