How LOUD is a SQWD?

i have one on my little 20 gallon and i am just wondering how loud are they? or should they be?

my tank is painfully loud and i cant figure out what is making the noise...it sounds like running gurgling water..

the durso is silent...the overflow box is silent...the drain line into teh sump is pretty close to silent...

i think it may be my drain line...hard piped PVC ...there is a about 3' fall broken about three times by 45* elbows...when i shut the air valve on the durso and the drain start a siphon it is nice and silent until the water level in the overflow box hits the top of the bulkhead...and i am sure you know what that sounds like..i just have a strainer on the bulkhead though...should i put in a downturned elbow and let it siphon?

right now the noise is unacceptable in the bedroom it is in...MINE...

HELP please...

the search isnt working right now i cant even look up either problem...

I have 3 SCWDs on my propagation tank. None of them make a sound. I guess you have to isolate where the noise is coming from first. Is it drain side or return side? Usually most noise is caused either by air passing through the system or water "crashing" or falling from height. Good luck and keep us posted.

it is definately drain....when i plug the hole i get full siphon and while in full siphon i have zero noise...until the point at which the siphon exceeds the return volumn and then i get the dreaded and very loud vortexing noise...

i think i may it figured out though...i put a 1/4 air line down my drain line right to the end of it and then took on of the air adjustment thingy-ma-bob's off on of my maxijets and put that in the end of the line for very fine tuning, and that seems to have solve 90% of the noise...

they way and reason i was told this would work is that with standard durso, the air mixs into your drain line right at the top of the drain, therefore splashing and what not down the length of the drain line...by introducing the air at the bottom of the drain line it has no where to splash into but the sump...

works in theory...and seemed to with my three hands holding it all in place whislt waiting for the tank to overflow...here's hoping...i just have the closed loop running now until the 'household goop' has a chance to cure a bit...only gonna give it and hour though...since my sump has zero movement right now and i dont like that...

fortunately i have no livestock...so nothing to loose, other then the fully cured rock i just paid an arm and a leg for...

i was also told that using flex line and putting a makeshift "P" trap in it will also calm down the noise a bit...that i suppose is my next resort if this airline doesnt work...

next problem is ridding my tank of micro bubbles...i may have to add an extra baffle or two...or make the return area larger so the pump isnt sucking the bubbles in as they fall over the last baffles..
