How Many Clams in a Tank

Hi everyone,

How many clams can one keep in a tank? Is there a certain clam/tank size ratio or is it a matter of just how many you can fit in it?

I have a 180g SPS tank and it has 4 clams in it. I have room on the sandbed for 2 more clams. The 4 clams are doing great.

I think you can have a few more. Just have to keep up with your calcium and stuff like that. They actually help filter your water..

Just installed a Ca reactor, so I should be ok w/ Ca.

I always heard that clams consume nitrates, but figured those are probably those cheap clams you see at the supermarkets. Do the clams we buy for our tanks consume nitrates as well? And if so, is it a significant help?

the zoox they house do use some N and P but i dont think you will see any noticeable decrease

MBBUNA - is it normal for a clam to open very wide? Most clams I see in pics have that top part closer together. Mine's growing very fast and is very spread open.

all of them or just one clam?

what kind of clam are we talking about?

do you have a pic?

Well two are very wide spread, the other two are normal. I am not good w/ clam types, but I'll post a pic for you.

Below is the same clam months ago. It's smaller, but you can still see how it's spread
