How many clams is too many?

I've got a 75 Gallon tank and over the past year I have fallen in love with clams. Currently I have 1 Crocea, 1 Teardrop Maxima, 1 Squamosa, and 2 Dersa's. Is this too many for a tank my size? Calcium and Alk seems to be pretty stable and they are all doing fine for a long time now, but if it seems like a little too many I might have to rethink my situation here. I'm not really in love with the squamosa and wouldn't mind getting rid of one of the dersas since they both look the same except one is an inch bigger than the other.
So what do you think?

You don't have too many clams at all. You have too small of a tank .

As long as they get enough food I'd think they'd be fine. And I think dugg said it beautifully. Not too many at all, lol.

Like it has been said, they have to have enough food, enough light, correct water parameters, and make sure to have enough calcium. If you can keep up with their demand, then you will be fine regardless of tank size. But the larger the tank, the easier it will be to keep the clams. Nothing like having an 8" T. deresa in a 10g tank. It can be done, but it would be HARD!

Actually, to many clams would be the one you place in your tank that would kill all the others. Clams are prone to diseases. One sick clam in your tank and all your clams die. I have seen it many times.

what kind of deseases are they prone too? anything i should be specifcally checking for constantly? I read somewhere to check for a type of snail that will eat clams, but i didn't see anything like that on mine. he seems healthy but i've never owned a clam so for all I know he's screaming in agony and me and the misses are looking at him and saying "oh what a pretty clam"

My last bad experience was with a Vietnamese Maxi. ( I had 1 other bad experince) It did fine for a week or 2. It started looking bad 1 day and the next day it was dead. Within a week my other 4 clams were dead. I guess I should have quarantined it for a month. But who has time or money to set up 55 gallon tank with halides etc. to make sure 1 clam is good? Not I. So now I have 2 real pretty clams and I am going to stick with them.

FWIW, you can keep an eye out for clam predators such as Pyramid Snails (not to be confused with Rissoid Snails) and Oenone fulgida; a mollusk predator. There are a few other things that you'll need to watch out for, but they don't show up nearly as often.

like doug said, if you are lucky and all your clams are doing well, then count your blessing and dont add another until you quarantine. i lost a lot of clams from one sick clam.

Yea that's the exact type of clam I am after now too... but I think I might get rid of one of these derasa's first.
