Is there such thing as how many clams you can put in a tank.
I have a 29 gal tank and just got my very first poehpei maxima and i like it alot. I plan to have more very soon. can i keep 4-5 clams in my little tank?

Clams need a lot of light and a lot of calcium. if you can supply those in adequate quantity, you're half way there. Given that, they also grow so leave room for that.

Be sure to test and maintain high ALK too....clams deplete alk VERY rapidly? What size clams are you getting? Smaller ones you might need to feed? Just curious as someone with a 29 too...what kind of lights do you have?

i'm using 250w hqi and the poehpei maxima i have in there now is about 3 inches. I feed live phyto everyday. So far, its doing great. I'm using RED SEA test kit and their alk test kit sucks!! the chart has no number. rather, it shows a chart with the color and labeled from low, normal, to high. My alk is between normal and high but i dont know what the exact number on that. My calcium is about 400ppm. For some reason i can get it above 400. I dosed liquid calcium and liquid reactor but the level is stll the same. I'm looking into a reactor now.

That's awesome. I'd reccomend getting Salifert kits....get that alk and CA up into perfect range and your clams growth will take off :)

It's probably not best to add any more clams until you know that you can keep the clam long term; alot of people report having mystery deaths a couple weeks/months after introduction, such that the clam looked completely healthy until the day it died. Your single max will easily double/triple in size over time if given the right environment, and other Tridacnas get even bigger (some larger than your whole tank). I definitely wouldn't plan on adding any more clams anytime soon.

thanks for the warning. I thought about it for awhile and decided not get another one for awhile. reason being as you described.
