I am planning on drilling my 50 gallon and adding a standpipe for the drain. If I drill a 1.5" hole and use all 1.5" pvc piping do I need two drains???? I will be using the quite one 4000 pump which pumps 1017gph but with my 4 feet of head it will probably only pump about 600-700 gph. What you guys think???

I think that is too much flow through your sump. I would shoot for a 600 GPH pump and a 1 inch bulkhead with 1.25 standpipe.

Is there a rule of thumb when figuring out what size pipe and bulkhead to use when determining how much flow you want?

Use either powerheads or a closed loop for flow, use your overflow/return pump to get water to and from your sump for contact time with your skimmer/fuge.

so if I used a ball valve to slow down my pump a bit would that work???? or does that only put added preasure on my pump??

most pumps can hande this just fine. Once your new plumbing slimes over you can probabaly open the valve more.
