I just began to cycle my tank, and are starting to look at fish. I have a small list and am wondering how many i can fit in my tank?:fish1: :fish1:

I have a canister filter, made for 100 gallons. Would a list of fish im looking at help?

Yes.

Most canister filters aren't exactly well suited for SW tanks. Do you have life rock, a skimmer, or anything else like that?

Most BIG fish aren't going to be well suited for a 75g but you can handle 10-15 smaller fish after a few months.

No sir, I sadly dont. Its Fluval. Ive heard good reviews about it. Heres my basic list atm.

1 blue tang
1 yellow tang
1 naso tang
1 bennetts' sharpnose puffer
1 humu Picasso trigger
and going to add at a later time.
1 emperor angle (dont know yet)
1 long nose butterfly
1 Double saddle
and 1 aurigra or true faluca butterfly.

Well I hate to be the bearer of the bad news but without live rock or a skimmer almost all of those fish will be very difficult to keep.

The tangs will all outgrow the tank....the blue and naso within months. They get massive and both require 180+ tanks that are about 8' long.

The yellow tang would work for a while longer if you find a TINY one to start...but they are prone to ICH (all tangs are)

The picasso is going to be big and aggressive towards more passive tankmates and may be best left out.

The emp angel will get bigger than your torso and requires a ~250g tank. Think dinner plate with fins.

The long nose would work well but is going to be difficult to get eating as a beginner fish. You may want to start with some of the smaller, more easy to keep species first.

Only one tang if you have more than one they will fight
and you need lr for algae and pods for tang, and butterfly fish

thats some big fish for a 75,
i would do some more invesigating before you got these fish
butterfly fish i know need a well established tank with lots of pods
and they will quickly deplet your tank and you will be buying pods (expensive) a fuge helps maintain pods (thats y canisters are not really the best choice for reef tanks

i dont even think i will handle that bioload, if so you are looking at alot of maintaince

I would look in to getting a good skimmer, it will keep you from having problems down the road

Its not reef. Its FO. and how much are these skimmers? How would i attach it? Any other fish choices?

Skimmer for that size tank are $250 and up for the most part. There are plenty you could get that simply hang on the side of the tank.

Lots of great fish choices for you:
Coral Beauty Angel
Pair of clownfish
Flame Hawkfish
Yellow Watchman Goby
Starry Blenny
Royal Gramma Basslet
Flame Angel (not with the coral beauty though...one or the other)

That should give you a good start...

At my lfs they said i could easily have a pacific blue tang in my tank. I know they grow to 1', Could i do less fish but bigger? or no?

Well unfortunately you're going to get a lot of advice from the LFS like that since they probably have the blue tang in the store to sell you. That's what businesses do!

Now secondly...I don't know why you'd want a 1' fish in a 4' tank. The fish wouldn't EVER behave normally and would have some serious stress related illnesses in short order.

You really can't 'squeeze' less big fish in that size tank. Unfortunately in the SW world the BIG fish require HUGE tanks where as some of the FW fish are a little more manageable.

I would honestly be weary of putting anything that gets over 5-6" inches in a 75g tank because they just won't be able to behave naturally. You also have to consider a 1' tank is going to have a hard time turning around in a 17" deep tank (interior dimensions!)...much less with decorations etc.

I know it's not what you're wanting to hear but this place will give you sound advice that will save you money and fish in the long run. You will end up losing a lot of fish and money if you put too many fish in that tank too fast...and you have to remember that MOST fish stores don't have any problem with you losing fish because you'll come back for another one $$$$$$.

So of the fish i named. Which can i get away with SUCESSFULLY? Because i would rather get slightly bigger fish (5-8") could you name some others for me maybe? thanks.

Id say one small tang i have a purple in mine and
you could get away with a butterfly fish in time
you need a well established tank like 1 year plus
