How many fish should I get to get a pair? I want to breed banggai cardinals and want to know how many I should get.

a safe number for them is 2. if they are large enough its easy to tell, if they are smaller---well its a little harder but not impossible. someone posted some really good pics on the board that shows it. but you are looking for "spines" on the underside around the cloaca, between the anal and pelvic fins

If you order online at LA they usually have an immature tank bred pair listed on their site in the DD section. I recently ordered 4 of the middle sized tank bred from live aquaria from the California facility. I got them cheaper than the matched pair on divers den. I seem to have a pair. I usually look for min of 4, but 6 is better. Do u have a small budget is that why you are trying the minimum. If you are breeding them it doesn't hurt to have more specimens. You have to give the males a break so that they can recover after they carry the eggs. You also may lose some along the way and you won't have a misstep or delay in trying to get others QT and ready for breeding if u have more than 2 in line ready for breeding. I went with the larger size because I think the smaller size are more delicate after shipping and have to go through QT and usually HT. I found even with the middle sized some would go into shock by turning the lights on abruptly. I have mine for 2 weeks and I have done TT method. They all are eating and will do prazipro for next 2 weeks. I also did FW dip and they could handle only about 2 mins. If you do dip stay close and don't do something else like I was doing. I was cleaning a top, when I came back one was in shock and floating. It recovered but taught me a lesson.

I have lower budget because I would like to by a new piece of equipment and if I buy 6 I would have to wait to get engough money and also I don't have enough tanks. I have a 55 gal, a 40 gal quarantine tank, a 20 gal tank that I set up about 3 months ago, and a 10 gal reef that I had up for a year.

Frizzo, the 20 gal or less should be the QT tank since you would have to do the TT method for ich. Otherwise u use to much salt. For small fish I use the 10 gall and fill it up to 5gal. This way I only lose 20gallons of salt water. I also put a large limestone holey rock to give a feeling of security and also the separation space if any aggression occurs. If the fish need more space then I add more water or setup another 10gal. Well I got a pair out of four. Lost one or it s hiding very well.

Side by side you can tell them apart but just looking at them sometimes I'm not sure. The only way I know for sure which one is the male is when I feed and he doesn't eat. One of these days I really gotta take these 2 out of my display and start breeding them myself. They "host" in this elegance

I get my water from the ocean so I don't spend any money it's just my time and effort. It's also for the fish I catch from the ocean.

I to have lost a fish but I'm not sure where he went. I'm almost sure it died or it sump he was close to the end and i was trying to nurse him back to health but I don't think it worked.

That's really cool how long did it take for you to get them to breed from the day you got them. The look great by the way.
