How many hours do you run your metal halides?

Wattage dosnt matter . We forget that the lighting we use is a spot light theres no shift in daylight in ower tanks. In the barrier reef the coral only get 5 hour of direct sunlight theres no spot light effect on them the hole day, As the hours go by the suns rays move away from them, So why not do the same as nature . All we are doing is stressing ower corals out from giving them to much light a day , thats why alot of reefers get slow growth and pale colors .

i know this is a older thread but just wanted to bump and see if anyone changed to a different time and saw better results or worse.

Well now with leds. I actually do a combo as I believe MH are far better for spa in terms of growth and colour but up where I live hydro is expensive. So I choose kessils to supplement my MH. I run MH Sat, Sun, Tues, and Thrus for 4 hours and every day run the kessils for 12. Works for me.

Other than to keep costs down, which I completely understand, is there any reason for such short photo-periods? I mean, these creatures are hard wired to bake under the tropical sun for at least 14 hours a day.

Or do you mean that you supplement with some other form of lighting for the rest of the time?
