just curious. i have read that they should be fasted for 1 day out of the week, but what about the rest of the week.

my 2 ponies and 2 green dragon pipes get at least 1 cube of mysis per day. they are pigs. when i'm home all day on the weekends they usually get more cause they beg for food when they see me and i'm too much of a pushover. about the fasting...i dunno

I am bad when it comes to feeding... I feed myne one big meal a day cause im too lazy to thaw more mysis, and because feeding time is very frustrating as my horses will never eat while i am in the room. I do one or two fast days when Im really busy. However, there is a steady supply of pods which i have seen them eat so they are not malnourished

Fasting was suggested when it was learned (post-mortem) that many seahorses had fatty livers. It is particularly suggested when feeding PE Mysis which has a higher fat content.
When I was feeding PE I didn't fast the horses, but I did give them live brine once a week. I can't stand to see them looking so hungry.
I now feed Hikari and I do not fast my horses, the four of them eat 2 cubes per day and three times a week also get the leftovers that the suncoral misses (it's a messy eater).

I feed 2x a day, usually: some days I feed once time a day, because of work...
I always feed a lot, but only as much as they and the blenny/jawfish can eat within, say, 20 minutes...figure around 7 peices of mysis each: and I feed PE...

horses shouldn't be fed only 1 time a day: thier poor little tummiesare non-existant: they only have intestine, so the food passes through too fast for them to digest. and you don't want to over-feed, cause then they poop out whole shrimp.

being lazy isn't an excuse: I thaw out HUGE chunks overnight, and feed it out over two meals: mysis in the fridge will keep for a day or two.

i try to feed my Kuda 1 cube each three times a day. I feed Hikari Mysis. Often they only get to eat twice a day. Sometimes only once. Every now and then I skip a day for whatever reason.

I read as other reader said, that they have no stomach, only intestine. For this reason you must 1) not feed to little as they need a more continuous feed schedule so as to more continuosly digest, 2) not feed too much as it is just a waste for them to poop out uneaten food.

I guess the trick is to understand the unlike other fish, they can't bing and then not eat for three days.

For example, my clown fish are pigs, they would eat till they pop if I let them. On the other hand, they can go without food for up to a week and be fine. So feeding can be shall we say a bit casual with my clowns (and most other fish more or less for that matter).

But seahorse lack a stomach that can store food and digest it fully. I am not up on the details of the science or biology behind it but suffice it to say, they can't be feed as casually as clown fish. They should be given a regular schedule with the correct "not too much, not too little" amount of food. In the end your horses will tell you how much to feed them. Most people I have read feed 1 cube / horse - twice per day and fast one day every week or two. This is a good place to start, then observe your fish and adjust to how much they eat.

Feeding observation is particulary important with new horses. They eat much less during the first 3 week in their new home but should show continuous signs of increased eating each couple fo days, during this period (at least this is what mine did). The point being, watch your new horses and adjust feed amounts as they need more.

Good luck, Kevin

Seahorses will vary on how much to feed. As a rule, they will stop when full. A good way to tell how much to feed it to play with the amounts until you have a little left over. Then adjust slightly.
Juveniles are a lot like teenagers. They can eat a lot. They often get underfed by both lfs and hobyists.
As a general rule of thumb, I find most juvenile to adult seahorses can eat about a cube of mysis per pair per feeding.

I'm just starting. I bought a flat pack of PE Mysis, and judging quantity will be hard.
Which brand of of cubed mysis do you all use? Does PE make cubes?

I got the same thing you did, and used a hammer to break it up into smaller peices, then placed THOSE into ziplocks.

You get used to how much to thaw out for a day/feeding. I thaw out enough for a days worth of feeding: probably a chunk about a half inch by half inch for my three. I have to break up some bigger peices now, but thats ok. and don't smash it TOO small, unless your horses are small... it ends up not being whole peices, which I fed out first when the horses were smaller.

my next pack, I'm going to try using a hot knife to cut 1/2x1/2 inch peices

thanks Dan, I guess I may be overfeeding my horses by twice. Well, thanks goodness for a good cleanup crew. I think I'll pay a little more attention to how fast they eat and adjust if necessary.

I feed my 2 H. kelloggi 1 cube of SFB Mysis twice day at least (or if I am using Hikari feed 2 cubes/twice a day). As they keep growing their quantity is getting increased but that is the current feeding. They also get some live brine usually once a week. Anyway hope this helps!
