Depends alot on how vigilant you are about controlling Ammonia and nitrites during the cycling phase (easier in a large volume system as opposed to a small volume tank). Also how the rock is handle while installing it (air exposure damages some sponges). There are some sponges and inverts (filter feeding tube worms) that are less adaptable to aquariums and might die slowly over several months due to food requiremnts but with care, there should be minimal die-off of most of what is on the rocks.
