How much do you get for your ocellaris?

Hello, questions for those of you who breed and sell A. Ocellaris.

Do you sell them to LFS or to the public? If you sell them to LFS, how much do they give you for your fish (in proportion of their retail price), 40% 50% ?

And, last question, at what age (and size) the A. Ocellaris is big enough to be sold?

Thanks. :)

I sell them for $5.00 when they are about an inch. They are usually around 5 months old

only?!?!
dang, i thought they could sell for around $8-$10. and sooner too.
i'll call my LFS and see if they'll make some deals.

Thanks for the answers.

What is the retail price in your area? The reason why I asked for percentage is to make a comparaison for the montreal market. Ocellaris are sold (retail) for 25 to 30$ CAD (21 to 26$ USD)

5$ is not a lot. As FFFrog, I expected a bit more. :(

Always ask for more and bargain, 5 dollars is too cheap why go through all the trouble?

Most hatcheries... they sell from 6.50 and around 6 or 5.50 if you buy lots. Ocellaris is usually the most expensive I guees because of the demand, I have seen tomatos clark's and even marrons for 5 bucks or so.

Giving them way so cheap hurts the market, there is not much competition and wild caught stocks are going to be restricted in the near future.

tomatos for 5.00 is a good deal. i've decided to give away for free to ones I raised (around 100 of them) to hobbyists , since I only did that for fun and stores weren't really interested in tomatoes.

with the species I'm breeding now (it's a secret ;) ) it will be a different story

Armondo, Details good...secrets BAD! ;)

Best bang for my buck has been "selling them to the store for store credit. The store will give you more $$ because they get to make their usual profit/markup when you spend the money in the store. I'm getting $6 a peice for my Clarks, and can;t come anywhere near raising enough of them to completely offset my spending there. It does significanlty reduce the amount of cash I have to give them though. They offered $5 cash too, so I said "how about $7 store credit", he said $6, I said deal!

Couple thoughts:

"i'd like to know as well, because im debating which clowns to breed." IF your intention is to breed for "profit" (at least to cover some % of expense) then just consider that you cannot possibly raise too many ocellaris, you can sell every one you can grow out. IME this is not true with tomatos or gsm's, those are the only three species I've managed in any quantity so far. I can't even come close to meeting the demand for ocellaris while I have too many of the others. I am desperatley trying to aquire more osc pairs.

"Best bang for my buck has been "selling them to the store for store credit." I really could not possibly dissagree more, you shouldn't be paying retail for much of anything if you are breeding. As a breeder you should be buying in bulk either directly from wholesalers or through online suppliers at close to wholesale prices. Most stores are gonna give approx 1/3 of the selling price, which you are then gonna use to buy something at retail that they paid 1/3 of that for. You are getting 1/6 of the value of your fish !!! Then you are gonna pay sales tax on top of that, usually based on the full retail price of the product you bought. IMO it's a terrible deal. If a store wants to "trade" I will trade retail for retail or wholesale for wholesale, but certainly not take wholesale credit for my fish and then pay retail for their products, that is just nuts. If they don't want to buy them I move on, fortunatley for me So Cal is a huge market :)

"Most hatcheries... they sell from 6.50 and around 6 or 5.50 if you buy lots. " That is the same pricing as all the Los Angelos wholesalers.

"What is the retail price in your area? " $20-$25 USD In one store my fish are side by side with ORA's. The price is $20 for ORA and $25 for mine. Mine sell out before theirs do
:D

Last comment: I thought the biggest thing I had going was color, I am lucky to have gorgeous fish. That is not what the stores like, what thrills them is that there is no loss. They sell every one they buy, and that is not true for fish from any other source. No matter how strong fish are when they get bagged, there seems to always be loss from shipping stress or some other factor. So the store gets a higher return when they buy from me. Also they have no shipping costs, so I am a better deal all around. You should bring up these points when negotiating with your lfs.

Nice thoughts David M, thanks :) .

Good analysis of the store credit. I would be interested in store credit but at a much higher rate cash buy.

Online suppliers may have lower price tags but when I consider shipping cost it comes close to my LFS. One advantage is that it's delivered to my door :)

I was thinking the 'personal free delivery ,no loss and strong captive breed fish' was such a positive thing that it could lead to a higher price. I understand the LFS have to make profits too and they prefer to pay less as possible.

Thanks everyone for your answers.

they can and will pay a little more, and charge a little more for "Locally raised fish" its not just less dieoff for them, its a selling point right now, if used right.

Wow! You guys that are selling for $5 and selling for credit are ripping yourselves off. Stop it. The only time you should be selling for less than the going wholesale/hatchery price is if you are selling in mass, i.e. >200 fish at a time.

Here is what I did in regards to LFS in my area...

Find one that you can be comfortable doing business with. Make them your first customer. Get a look at the wholesale and hatchery prices they are paying. Charge them the same as they would pay if they ordered the fish.

When they come back with the "Well if yours aren't less why should I get them from you?!?!?" give them this... "They are cheaper, you are not paying shipping and I will deliver them for free when you need them. No special trips to the airport or waiting for FedEx." Then you remind them they are doing business "face to face" and that has value as well.

When you are buying food, salt, etc you should be buying at wholesale rates. You are running a business, make it legal and get the permits, etc and open an account with the wholesalers. The ones you can't because you don't have a store front work with your #1 customer and make a deal to cut them a break on their next order if they let you order thru them.

I just got a reply from a LFS in my area (Montreal). He said he would take them all (occelaris) and give about 6-8$. Encouraging :)

He also mentioned to not look too much for profits as it turns about 2$/hour job. I knew that :D

why not sell outta your house @ 15???

The profit is quite bigger but I'm not sure I want to have people in and out of my appartment.

why not sell outta your house @ 15???

Three reasons:
1) It's a pain in the butt
2) There are liability issues. Your homeowner's insurance is unlikely to cover business expenses if someone trips and falls in your house.
3) Your time is worth more
4) It can damage your relationships with your wholesale clients if you are undercutting their prices and potentially driving business away from them.

Okay, that was four reasons.

Some folks can and do sell out of their house. I will probably sell my little batch I have now out of my house, but that's only 25 clowns. I wouldn't do it from a business perspective, though.

Sure -- fish stores, distributors, etc. If you are producing, say, a hundred clowns per month per broodstock pair, it's going to be very hard to find buyers for all those fish by casual word of mouth... ones that are willing to work around your schedule, too.

My erperience of "home sales" of mir first wurdemani batch:

Clients talk for 2-3 hrs, dring all your coffee and coke, try to negotiate the price and the walk off with 2-5 shrimps ;) - never again :D

As Nicole said my time is worth much more!
