How much water does your tank evaporate per day?

I'm not positive, but I think mine is evaporating about 2-3 gallons a day...which seems really high to me? It's a 75 gallon with a 30 gallon sump. I think a lot of the evaporation might be coming from all the microbubbles popping at the surface in the first chamber where the water pours in. I am trying to build a plexiglass top that will fit around my skimmer to allow me to cover my sump.

What do you guys/gals think?

What lighting? Do you run fans? Splash may account for some but evaporation is most of it. I top off 35 gal./wk. I have 2 250 watt halides and 400 watts of pcs. Just remember, without evaporation, the temp will rise. BTW, I have two large fans. One on the sump and one over the display.

2 250w halides. I put one small fan in the canopy, but I don't always run it. As long as the thermostat is set to 72-74 degrees in teh house, the tank won't go much over 80. If I leave the fan on it will drop the temp down to around 75.

I don't think it's splashing that's causing it...but I think that the bubbles popping adds to the evaporation in teh sump. Theres a small spray/mist of water you can see rising from the sump above the first chamber sometimes.

If your tank temp is staying low enough, I see no problem about covering the part of your sump.

I lose about 2.5 to 3 gallon a day in my 120g open top tank with two fans blowing on it (one over sump and another over the display tank.) In winter time when I don't run any fan, the tank evaporate much less (less than a gallon a day.)

I also loose about 2-2 1/2 gallons per day on my 92 gallon open top, with 20 gallon sump. I have one fan blowing on the water, and one blowing out of the canopy. Temperature stays at 80.1-80.5 always.

I have 1 250 watt MH and 1 400 watt MH on the tank, as well.

Well with My tanks now I really have no idea since they all have Auto Top offs.. But when I had my 72Gallon It lost about 1.5 Gallons a Day with an open top and 2X250watt MH lighing.. Summer temp was 78-80 summer and 77-78 Winter.

Yours sounds pretty normal to me. Tanks Evap alot more water then you think.. If you read a lil over in the large tank Forum you would be suprised how many people have moisture problems in there Homes cause of it..

On my 55 I have about 1/2 gallon a day. On my 10 it is a little less than a quart. Not a lot but noticable.

My 210 loses almost 10 gallons a day. Running 3 250w halides and 2 6ft vho's. The sump has two grow lights 24hrs a day. The canopy has 4 computers fans running and one clip on house fan.

My tank temp is 80-81. I think all the evaporation is from the fans. The house is humid but not too bad. No mold issues. Atleast none we can see.
