I have sand in my fuge now, and hate it. When I swap over to my new fuge in a few days I will be going sandless.
It will be much easier to get more flow in the fuge and easier to clean up.
I thought you didn't want much flow in a fuge? Very interested in this thread given I just got fuge sand for my new setup. Plan is to use 6" with low flow and Cheato but can just as easy leave it out. Main tank will be BB with tons of flow and will use a Calcium Reactor. What advantage does more flow give?
I am sitting with 5" of sand in my new refugium and have not put any water in it yet. Why? Because I can't decide if I want a DSB or not? I want the DSB to reduce the nitrates, I want the Cheato the macro algea to also reduce nitrates and to keep pods in it. I was thinking too much flow would be an issue with the sand bed but I also don't want to create a timebomb with a DSB and not alot of flow. So, what do we do???
My new stand design will allow easy access and removal of the fuge sand if I decide to clean and/or replace after a period of time to avoid the "timebomb" if it actually exists. Figure better safe than sorry. The plumbing will have isolation valves and bypasses for the fuge from day one.
I now have about 40 lbs of southdown so the depth in my fuge will be determined by the size fuge I end up making to fit the new tank and how far this 40 goes. In other words, what I get is what I get. How s that for being scientific LOL.
