Without those answers it's pretty much impossible to give you anything close to an exact figure.
Generally speaking:
For a Fowlr (fish only with live rock), 10-20x is plenty. Just avoid dead spots so detritus doesn't build up someplace and cause issues.
Soft corals and many LPS - aim for 20-30x
LPS - 30-40x
SPS - more (within reason) is good.
My SPS dominant mixed reef tops out at about 80 or 90x, averaging 65 or 70x.

One of the things I've heard is that you generally want to increase flow until the polyps start to retract or not extend that much - once that happens starts to dial back the flow.
Is this a philosophy you agree with?

My flow is very randomized. I use 2 Gyre 250's along with a pair of 1500gph koralias on the back wall on programmers and a 850gph Koralia on one side at the back just to keep flow behind the rocks.
My corals all experience varying flow rates throughout the day that way and seem to do pretty well

I was going to say the same thing. It's all trial and error until you find that sweet spot
