how much hermits?

Some people stock as many as 1 small hermit per gallon of water. That's a little much, IMO. I wouldn't put anymore than 5 hermits in a 10g.

do hermits produce a large bioload?
No, hardly any. The issue to me, if you are using them as a clean up crew, is making sure that each individual gets enough to eat. You could probably actually put dozens in a 10g and give them plenty of food just for them, if you just want a tank of hermits.

1 single hermit will do. Mine is trouble-in-a-shell, he goes around knowing the Gorgonia over every night, and likes to pick the red macro algae off the tunicates.

That said, I have only fed him once, perhaps I should feed more, but this is easier said than done. Mine likes to hang out in the caves during light on, and comes out after the lights are off.
