How much is to much?

I have a 75 gallon tank i am starting. I have a maxi jet 900,1200, both with the sureflow upgrade kits, and a koralia 1 blowing behind the rock. I was wondering are these powerheads plus the return from my sump too much flow. If i don't have them adjusted just right it blow the sand into huge piles, and it is really hard to feed my fish because as soon as the food hits the water it gets blown around really violently. Any insight would be of help thanks in advance.

to reef central!

It might ad a bit more wear and tear on the modded MJ's but you could put the 1200 and/or the 900 on a power strip and simply turn em off when you feed.
Maybe you could swap out the MJ's w/600's or if that can't work, file down the props until you reach a level of flow you're more comfortable with.

that flow seems fine. I have about 6000gph in my tank but i also have a food button which helps with feeding.

I find that my fish prefer to chase the food. When I turn off the circulation they wait until I turn it back on before the get busy.

Between 20 and 40x display volume turnover is a general guideline but it's not set in stone. It really depends on your equipment, aqua-scaping and your livestock. Some people run 60 and 70x. At some point I think you could go over board, but I think you would know by all your sand being in the water column, Your corals would appear to be in a hurricane tidal surge, and your fish being pinned up against the side of the tank.
