how much is too much?

picked up these 2 corals shown by the arrows a couple of weeks ago. after 4-5 days on the sandbed I put them into the positions shown. as you can see, the top one is starting to shown signs of receding. How can I tell if this because of too much light or not enough light or something else? the bottom one shows no issues ...

my favias, (I blew up the picture and think that is what you have) are in direct light but on the sand bed on a small rock to keep edges out of sand, I give them direct light under my led's but my tank is 30 inches deep, just not direct water flow. Sometimes my corals recede after they are shipped or in a bag from rubbing in the bag. If its one side of the coral I worry more about too much flow or light issues, or that it had some rubbing in the bag or shipping.

my tank is 24" deep. I put this one a little higher up in the water column becuase it was not directly under one of my AI Sols ... so you think it may need more light?

In my experience they like low light. I even had one that had to be put under a overhang resulting in no light. It is looking better with deeper colors.

+1 on less light. I also placed mine under an overhang and they coloured up nicely.

I agree. Indirect light is best, I think.

That's the suggestions. If not no light. Depends on the animal. Have a buddy with the Jason Fox Anti Venom who against all judgement had to place under a rock resulting in no light. The piece is now amazing after burning from too much light. I'll see if I can grab a pic to post.

Here we have Krazy_karl 's JF Anti Venom Favia completely shaded under an overhang. He started with a tiny frag as this coral is expensive. He burned it everywhere he placed it until placing it out of the light completely only receiving indirect now. I also followed this model for some of my favias with great results.

Tweaked what is that black with red spots coral??? My favia likes being out of the direct light. I keep it somewhat near my bowerbanki which also dislikes direct light.

That's the JF anti venom that I referenced just one post above. One of the most amazing favias I've seen yet.
