How much lime to use to make kalkwasser?

How much lime do you put in each gallon of water to make kalkwasser? I have been dosing kalkwasser for several weeks, and did not see much difference. I am suspecting that I did not put enough Mrs. Wages lime in the water. Thanks.

2 tsp per gallon is saturation. If you need more, add 45ml of white distilled vinager then you can add more.

I use a mixer that I built, but I just dump in as much pickling lime as I feel like. The dosed liquid should be a saturated solution, so I saturate it! So if there is undissolved pickling lime, that's no big deal. Of course I only dose the LIQUID and not the slushy undissolved stuff at the bottom of the mixer. I'm sure I waste a tiny amount, but in general as fresh water is added to the mixer, it dissolves more PL until it's saturated!

My mixer is like 4.5 feet tall, so my mixing pump is at the bottom and fresh RO/DI water is pumped in with a dosing pump near the bottom, and saturated limewater/kalkwasser is taken from the top (4 feet above where the mixing and RODI input is).

Just be sure not to dose the slush and only the liquid and you'll be fine!

Thanks a lot for the great information. I do not have a kalkwasser reactor, and premix the kalkwasser and use a feeding pump to dose it. I was putting 2 tsps in 5 gallons of water. I guess it is way too gentle on the portion:D.

It's better to start out slow and underdose vs. overdosing.

I just lost a sarmentosa mini colony with that mistake.

Can someone point me in the right direction of where to get pickling lime to make kalkwasser? And how much is it on average?

But you didn't lose the anthelia did you?? :)

yes, dose only the clear liquid and dose slowly (drip it in!)

I have a medical dosing pump "Enteral Feeding Pump" that doses kalk into the tank to match my evaporation rate. So it's slowly added, into the section of my sump where my skimmer is.

Incidentally, I heard that skimmers skim better in higher alkalinity water!

How is everyone handling the lime water? I hear it has a pretty high PH. I thought high PH values were corrosive? Are you touching this stuff w/ your bear hands or what? Can someone give a detailed explanation on how lime water is made and precautions that should be taken?

A bucket with a stick will do the job :D ..
Put water in a bucket then add Kalk - use the stick to mix it. :p

Elite is basically right BUT....after mixing, allow sediment to settle, then take the clear liquid at from the top of the bucket...

no they seem to grow back with a vegence every time I prune. i don't what's worse anthelia or aipstasia.

Yeah, yeah the aipstasia sting, but the anthelia cover every thing up too!

Does anyone know where to get a bottle of Mrs. Wage Pickling Lime locally? Or any other brand of calcium hydroxide?

Walmart (seasonaly) has Balls Pickling Lime (in the jam/canning) section. Otherwise, buying Mrs. Wages online is not that expensive.

You can try restaurant supply stores. Taquirias (sp?) use pickling lime to make tortillas, I think it's called "Cal" or tequesquite. (Google the words "Calcium hydroxide and Tortilla"). Maybe a taquiria is willing to sell you some for a few bucks!

I just called Precision Foods, makers of Mrs. Wage products, and they said that it's usually sold seasonally at Targets, Walmarts, and Krogers... The good knews is that she said that this is the time, spring time, of year that stores usually start putting them on the shelves. I'll go find out today.

You can't really overdose on kalkwasser per se as someone already mentioned hte saturation point is around 2 tsp per gallon. Anymore than that and it'll just settle out on the bottom.
