The Gen-x media is an alternative. I have had mixed reviews from customer's on it, and had some unexplained turf algae growth when I used it. Having said that, I'm not 100% sure it was the media, it may have just been a coincidence that it happened when I was using that media.
Thanks,
Jeremy
Jeremy, I tought you may be interested in this. I just tested the effluent of my reactor, I use Gen-X in the first chamber and ARM in the second chamber.
With Nitrate and Phosphate undetectable in my tank water, the effluent result as follows:
PO4 = 0.02 ppm
Nitrate=Undetectable
Alkalinity = 23.3 dKh
at effluent flow of 140 ml/min
PH first chamber 6.5 PH output of second chamber (Effluent) 6.75
PO4 was tested with Hanna Colorimeter
Nitrate and Alkalinity with LaMotte
PH first chamber Pin Point Controller
PH effluent Pin Point Monitor
So given that the acceptale range for a tank PO4 is 0.05 and the undetectable Nitrate I would say Gen-X is good.
As my normal effluent Alkalinity with ARM only media is normally 23 to 25 dKh I would say that at 6.5 PH Gen-X dissolves as well as ARM.
Hope the info helps. It will be nice to have someone elses tests too.
Please let me know when you get some Shuran, I would like to run a similar test.
Enjoy!
