How much LR is this?

I was at my LFS telling them that I wanted to convert to a reef and was told that I needed at least 60lbs of LR in my 55g. I have no idea how much is in my tank after adding these pieces. How much do you guys think this is? Could it be too much weight for my tank?

Well considering rock varies in weight, its kinda hard to tell. You can't tell how much something weighs just by looking at it.

Yea I know that.... But would you say it looks like way too much. with 2 years in the hobby and 1+ of those being freshwater...... I don't know what is too much and not.

Yeah what he said. How much did you have prior to this? How much did you add? Then take a plus b and that will equal c.

I assume I had about 40lbs before the add and I added a bit less. But I truly have no idea. All my rock was given to me. Oh well I will just say it's 60 and I'll believe it. LLOL

its actually more important that we see how much surface area it has rather than weight, so yea you're fine. also, evenif you idnt have what the guy at the LFS said to, all you would do is limit your bio load according to how much your rock could handle.

lbs of rock per gallon is a ridiculous form of measurement and the notion that you NEED 1-2 lbs of rock per gallon is a silly and false rule usually leading people to do more harm than good


Use how much rock as looks good to you, and most importantly, make sure you have good flow throughout what you have and that is the right amount of rock.

If you cant get good flow through what you have it is defeating its own purpose

Exactly. I have a 120g that probably has about the same amount of rock that you have now. It works great because water can flow all around it so there's no stagnant areas.
