How Often Do Your Wrasses Flash?

Like the title says, I'm wondering how often do your fairy/ flasher wrasses flash or display? I'm mostly going to be keeping males of each species, but a few pairs/trios. Do they ever display to males of other species? I think it is amazing to watch a gorgeous wrasse display and am hoping to see it more often in my tank.

usually i see my large rosy scale flash alot. he is the most established fairy i have and would flash when he chases the new ones around. got my lineatus and hooded for about 2 months haven't seen them flash yet

That's because they are fairy wrasse, not flasher.

fairy wrasses do not flash....my flashers flash quite often early when the lights come on and about an hour before the lights go off i do see some during the day and if there are some fighting going on i keep only males but have seen some color loss due to not keeping females..my fairys dispaly nuptial colors around the same times as well

For example, I'm going to be getting a cirrhilabrus tonozukai next week, and I'm wondering how often I'll be able to see him go from the first picture to the second picture down below. It's a fairy wrasse, but it puts on quite a display.

i find i depends on the fish i have had some that never displayed or never saw it happen and i hvae had some that would not quit doing it..if u could find females it would surely help..i really like the tonozukai but from wht i have seen they are pretty aggressive for a fairy but i really like red/ornage fish..

I really like the tonozukai too. I'm a bit worried about aggression, but the wrasses that he will be living with will be added at the same time, or are already in the tank. I wish I could get a female with him too, but I haven't been able to find any. It was hard enough to find a male.

yes the males are hard enough..i have only seen females once..what other wrasses do u have or are u getting???

The other fairies are a condei, exquisite, orange back, and pylei. Flashers are a pair of filamented flashers, and a lineopunctatus. And others are a radiant wrasse, yellow coris, and sixline (who I'm trying to trap).

As you can see nothing really fancy for this tank. I have another reef being setup to keep some of the rarer/more expensive ones like rhomboid, flame, lineatus etc.

On fishbase it says that the only way to identify females of the tonozukai is if they are found in the harem of a male. I guess the females look almost exactly the same as some other species. I hope to someday find a pair/trio of them so that I can have the females too.

yeah that sixline u are going to want to get rid of for sure..try and find a couple of females for that exqusite if u can they will lose alot of color if there are not any females..condei i like alot mine displayed like crazy every day also u will want females for the pylei they fade alot too

Thanks for the advice. I've been tryin to find a female or 2 for my exquisite but haven't been able to find any I liked yet. I've had him for a few months, and so far no color loss but I know what your saying. I can't wait to get the condei. He is going to be coming in with the tonozukai next week.

My fairies flash fairly often, but i think it's because of the amount of wrasses which i have. I have many friends with loaded tanks which this doesn't occur in. It might be just the availability of females + aggression . Here is my rhomboid flashing.

IFbettas,
If , or when you come down to SLC, get in touch with me, you can stop by and see my tank. I have over 20 wrasses in my tank and have been a wrasse nut for years.

I have got a couple of males - an African exquisite and Flame. They seldom displayed.

Then about 3 weeks ago a got a smaller female Flame to go along with the male. Now both the males display quite often. The behavior is slightly different between the two.. the Flame it tends to last longer and is more of a circling action, with the exquisite is more of a chase. Very cool.
