What are the dummest things you have done to your aquarium?
I'll start off... Last night I measured my s.g. after a 2 gallon skimmer overflow onto my carpet. I was wanting to check the s.g. since I have automated freshwater top-off, so 2 gallons of fresh water would have been pumped into the tank. Well, it was fine at 1.024. I have it normally at 1.025 so I thought I would do a slight correction. In the past I have just shut off the fresh water top-off and topped of with salt water for a while to make minor adjustments. I can't believe what I did last night. I took a mug of reef salt and emptied it into my sump. All the corals immediately retracted, the clams started convulsing violently. One of my prize pieces (a large Montepora Capricornis) sits directly under the water return from the sump. It got blasted with a very high salinity solution for 30 seconds or so. It rapidly started to produce a lots of slime and I could see that it was starting to expel tissue. This morning the damage assessment shows that I have only damaged the Montepora thankfully. Everything else is back to normal, but my prize Montepora has significant areas with lost tissue. I am hoping that since it is a fast grower that the areas will regenerate quickly before algae can settle on those areas and get a hold. I am also hoping that he damaged areas will not progress outwards!
I really don't know what possessed me. This has to be the dummest thing I have done since I started this hobby and what's worse is that I knew better. I must have been in a coma when I did it!
Anyway, in order to make me feel better, please post the craziest thing you have done to your reef.
