how to carve through epoxy putty

OK, a friend of mine gave me his tank, however he used plumbers epoxy putty on the bulk head. Whats the best way to remove this without damaging the bulkhead?

Just cut it and start again, the bulk head is probably cheaper than the putty!
I just bought 6 for under $10 bucks each

Putty is pretty brittle, I would expect that you could crack pieces off with a screwdriver. Score it with a razor, first, maybe.
