I have used frozen phytoplankton in the past, but have just change to culturing my own. To feed I just put the phytoplankton into the main aquarium water.
I agree with Simon. I simply add phytoplankton to the main tank in a high flow area. However (if you search the forum) you will find others place the clam in a small bowl of tank water and add a small amount of phytoplankton, allowing the clam to feed for 15-20 minutes(?).
I use the Phyto Culture Kit from CellPharm in England www.cellpharm.co.uk/aquarium.htm (they are just re-badged from Florida Aqua Farms in the US).
Starting a culture is very easy to do and the package comes with instructions and everything you need apart from a light and airpump. You can even just buy some culture plates and nutrients to get started and use old 2 litre coke bottles. I think culturing your own is probably the best bet considering your location.
