How to get into the elitist rare circles =)

Yes there are a lot of us newbies out there who have the usual brown polyps, yellow polyps, and idaho grape (it's spreading like wildfire, haha).

But how the heck will any of us ever get a hold of those super rare orejisuperpokersunriselokanisturakis I always wonder =)

I think there are a few ways to go about this, but there's really not much you can do other than hope for the best:

- buy a piece from someone who has it, and grow this rare frag out hoping it will still be rare once it's ready to go. This costs money initially, but think of all the frags you can make of it, and eventually you'll start collecting. it really only takes one nice rare piece to get started.

- be super lucky in a BAR frag swap and grab a rare piece off the tables, or in a raffle drawing =)

- start your own coral business and get first picks at wholesalers? I'm not entirely sure how easy this would be, but that's where these pieces come in the first place no?

- see if you can take a family portrait for someone's family with your spiffy camera to score a nice 3" frag ;)

soooo... anyone need portraits done?

haha =D

But in all seriousness, anybody interested in doing some kind of group buy on a few certain rare frags? We can inquire with matt at reefready, or rommel at ultimate frags, etc?

forgot to add:

- somehow score a cool morph of some coral or find something that isn't too expensive but just not commonly seen, and find someone who'd like to trade for it. sometimes no lineage doesn't mean ugly and undesirable =)

Lol

I say just trade or cash/trade with someone who has the rares your looking for :D

im sure there are people with LE stuff or nice zoa/palys that are here in the bay area :D

How??
Cheapest is go to the LFS everyday and hope you will score a nice piece that nobody has (Goodluck!!! :D )

Buy/trade it from another reefers

Buy a frag from a hobbyist or one of our sponsors, and prop the heck out of it for 8 months :) Then you can trade with reefers/LFS for other stuff :)

I did that.

I did that too :) Picked up a tiny browned out frag of "rare" monti off the swap table and propped the heck out of it for a year and a half. I gave away frags of it during that time, and finally did trade some for other cool stuff last year :)

Don't need a group buy for that. Just go to Atlantis or New Alameda or Aquatic Gallery or Dolphin or ReefReady etc etc and buy 1 frag of whatever you like, then grow it out :)

Check out the BAR mission statement. It's about propping, not group buys, hehe :)

Actually, you don't need to buy a superduper rare to prop and trade. Another thing I've done... become a regular at your LFS and prop tons of regular newbie corals and bring them to store. You can trade for something you're more interested in, or just give it away for future consideration when something cool shows up. Everybody wins :)

Kinetic,

I've given away plenty of frags of rare and semi rare stuff. What's cool is that as I give more stuff away other people want to give me their cool stuff. As a result I have gotten some very cool rare stuff.

Strangely the more I give, the more I get. This seems to work even better than trading!

Even cooler, I've found a group of similarly minded buddies in this hobby. We all know what each other likes so when something good comes to one it is quickly fragged and given to others.

But I have bought a few corals too. It seems to be a balance between how long I'm willing to wait and how much I'm willing to spend.

So I say, give away frags of as many cool corals as you can. You'll be surprised at what comes your way!

I know it's more of a rhetorical question from Art, so I'm just playing along.

I know that Art knows. Does he know that I know that he knows? :)

here is how i became a rare collector

prop xenia locally
my LFS told me i could sell stalks likes crazy for 5 bucks a piece, considering how fast it grows, it did sell like crazy.

hound the LFS for dates of when they will get the next shipment.
drop the money you need to and pick up a nice huge zoa rock and sell that or trade that off locally.

use the money from that and buy rare packs.

in 4 months i made 400 bucks off xenia and LFS zoos

oh my goodness, lol =)

and yes, a lot of you guys and other members of BAR and just fellow reefers have given me TONS of awesome rares as well =) Not a complaint at all =) One day I hope to do the same, just throwing some ideas out there, especially after I've been reading about how some people feel left out or don't really know how to get into some really nice pieces. It's rather easy, sorta. =P

But yeah, I've gotten some sweet things recently from many of you, and believe me, one day I'll have something I can give you that you'll want! Super Kinetic Reverse Rainbow Deepwater Icelandic SomethingThatEndsWithAnI.

just watch, i'll surprise you all with huge frags. hah!
