how to kill the gurgling

Where is the noise comming from? The overflow intake, or the sump exhuast? (or both?). If you drop Durso standpipe into google it will give you a lot of options on the overflow portion. For the exhaust you want to make sure the drain pipe doesn't go straight down.

I had gurgling coming from my overflows. It was because I had to much return going in to the tank. I cut down the return and the gurgling stopped.

+1 to turning down the return. That is what I had to do. When I blow debris off of the rocks weekly I crank it up all the way and just deal with the sound for the next few hours.

+2 I turned down the return. The problem is that if the return is on full-blast, the water level in the first chamber of the sump becomes higher than the hose opening, so air bubbles would be coming down the overflow hose then have to travel to the top of the water in the first chamber of the sump and that was where the gurgling was coming from.

Ball valves right before the water enters the sump.

I dont recommend this idea. If you ball valve the drain, one little snail can ruin your day real quick. If you are going to reduce flow, do it on the pump side, not the drain side. :)

I have done it for 5 years; you don’t reduce the flow that much I probably should have stated that. Reduce only the smallest amount to decrease the air flowing through the line, if you have to turn the valves a lot then your return pump is probably too small. Also I would make sure your have some kind of grate or something on the dursos to restrict anything to large from getting sucked down. I close mine enough to reduce the air from flowing through but their is still enough room for small snails to make their way down to the sump. It has worked for me, just my 2 cents.

Thanks so much for this link, EXACTLY what I was looking for. My husband had some pipes lying around and whipped one up in no time.. works perfectly!

Thanks again! :)
