How to lower nitrates without a water change!!!

Wow, i just god a weird look from my mom.

me: hey mom can do we have vodka
her: yeah
me: well can i see it.
her: for what?
me:for my tank
her:ok

lol thats a summary i actually had to show her the thread but noneless i just dosed my tank with 1 ml of smirnoff, my trates were off the chart but i will update u guys soon.

i would love to know if there are any adverse efects to fish using this method?
i have big fish and big tanks, with live rock and no corals. anything to reduce my salt bill to under 50 bucks a month would be awesome but not at the expense of my fish.
anyone with a fowler tank yused this method?

Godoftheseas lol yeah keep us updated, I want to know other peoples experiences as well

Hey Petstorejunkie I actually think this reduced my salt bill to zero $ hehe ;)and you lucked out because the only side affects I have are my mushrooms aren't very happy because they like some nutrients in the water as food. But seriousely if I were you I would keep dosing vodka, but not to much and you will have zero nitrates in no time.

And honestley this is one day of vodka powered skimmate :fun4:

I dose vodka, however Vodka can be harmful to your tank and fish. There are accounts of complete fish death. Not trying to scare you but this method is not dump some vodka in and see nitrates drop. Please do the research before you try this method. Here is an excellent thread compared to the one posted above.

I had no idea that vodka could help your tank. Of course 15 years ago I did not know that you could put super glue in a tank with no ill effects either :)

Does anyone have any concrete dosing instructions ml/gal that they have used successfully?

can this only be done with vodka? or would other alcohols work as well?

how about sugar, as mentioned in the thread? could that be potentiall safer than using vodka?

i am assuming that the real danger is oxygen depletion in the water, if additional air stones and surface aggitation were used could you greatl reduce this risk?

The main thing is to start out slowly. Additional air stones would be helpful and a skimmer is a must. Dosing during lights on is a must.

Dosing instructions are on page 21 of the thread I posted. Instructions are posted by Kokott.

Sugar may be a good alternative for you since you have no coral but I don't know of any threads with dosing or results.

I will post an additional recent thread with some good info.

I've used a denitrification fliter that is fed weekly with vodka for the past few year. Nitrate levels have remained low but I still do water changes.

korallin makes a sulphur based denitrator, and there are more and more knock-offs becoming available.

Sulphur denitrators have been used in Europe for years, but haven't really caught on here in the states yet
