How to maintain low Phosphates in large system

What method do you use to maintain phosphates in your large system?

I have a 1200G fish system and GFO is not a cost effective solution to keep phosphates low.

I picked up some lanthanum chloride by Seaklear but I haven't determined a good way to set it up safely.

Any advice is appreciated!

Seaklear is what I use. I dilute 5 ml into a gallon and feed it into my skimmer via a suction port on the suction side of my feed pump. There is a small air line tube with a ball valve to adjust the flow a drip or two per second .

If you are having issues keeping nitrates low you could look at carbon dosing. You can use multiple sources of carbon but you would be dosing a lot.

With the seaklear I have seen people drip it in to a 10 micron filter sock and let the sock catch the solids.

do you use any macro algae?

No. This is a fish system with prophylactic levels of medication in a retail environment.

I am well aware of the 5-10 micron filter sock method but I don't think its an effective solution for a 1200G system. It would clog way too quickly.

Try a battery of filter socks when using the LaC13, 6-8, in a drip-tray sort of arrangement in front of your sump. Yes, you will have to change socks every couple of days, but this situation will ease off as PO4 levels drop and eventually become stable.

I have a 400G sump that uses 8 filter socks that are 7" each. They are 300 micron and clog in 4 days.

How long do you think the 10 micron socks will last? :lolspin:

I expect the phosphate to drop fairly rapidly so you shouldn't have to worry much after a week or so.

And besides, what else did you have to do? ;)

I am not the one doing it, I have employees for that. :bounce3:

I do like the method of injecting Seaclear into the skimmer body. I have a pump that feeds my external skimmer that I can dose to.

Does anyone know how concentrated Seaclear is compared to a fully saturated mix?

I am not even sure how much to dose safely?

I have 200+ fish in this system and plan to keep at least 600+ fish eventually. I need a simple method to lower phosphates desperately. :uhoh3:
