How to minimize splash into sump?

After stepping up my system and over flow, now i run my mag 5 at full bore, with great turn over in the sump. The only problem is how does one reduce the splash from the overflow into the sump? I have a 1 1/2" return line, to a 2" tee-wye, that goes just into the water. Is it better to leave the return above the water level or deeper?

If you don't want to use filter socks, like me, you can use a piece of HDPE or cutting board sized to fit over the top of your return area. Then, run your return to a uniseal in the board.

Put a T on the drain going up (leave open) and run the drain right into the water. This lets it breathe and will have very little splashing if any. Filter sock on top of it and you will be good to go!

alternative: cut the end of the drain pipe at a sharp angle, then dip the end of the angle cut into the water with the rest above the water.

I use a filter sock, but make sure to keep the ring above the water line. This catches all the bubble that 'splash'. There is still the skimmer to contend with though!
