How to prep new rubbermaid can?

I am tired of mixing individual 5 gallon buckets of saltwater for my monthly water changes! I am thinking of investing in a large rubbermaid outdoor trash can (32 gallon) to mix water in. My question is what is the best way to clean out a new can before using it the first time? Just lots of fresh water or should something else be used or am I worrying about nothing?

Lots of freshwater, and get one of those Toughsomethingorother trashcans with the flat bottom. Get their roller if you need to move it around. Don't use the flimsy standard trash cans, as their thin bottoms can spring leaks and mess up your day something wicked.
