how do i prevent deseises such as velvet? i previously lost all of my fish to velvet and am starting over again. is there any chemical that i could purchase that could help prevent velvet and other deseises. thank you

the best pece of advice i can give is t get a q/t tank set up you may still lose that odd fish though it is unlikely and you will certainly not loose tham all.

quarantine is not an option.

think of the money a q/t tank would cost then think about the fish you lost it is an easy choice.

have some formalin ready to treat velvet if you get it again but q/t will isolate it to one fish.

Copper is the proven treatment for velvet.

Formalin baths will may dislodge some of the attached parasite (feeding stage) but unfortunately returning the fish to the tank will lead to reinfestation as the velvet parasite (cyst and free swimming stage) is in the tank. Formalin should not be dosed in the treatment tank but only baths as it can "strip" the water of oxygen. Fish with parasites are already oxygen deprived due to parasites in the gills and increased metabolic rate due to stress and increased "work load" to breath.

Treatment should always be done in a bare bottom tank with no porous materials (rock, etc).

Best preventition for disease - Quarantine everything wet (rock, inverts, corals, algae, fish, etc) for a minimum of 6 - 8 weeks.

ok thank you all for the help, well i was also wandering if i were to start a new tank is there anything that could be done to prevent my tank from ever getting velvet or is it just somthing that comes and goes.

anyone else kno how to prevent velvet? in the future

you could do formalind dips as a mater of course whilst fish are in q/t.

but that can be unnecessarily stressful.

velvet is really not that common q/t should be enough to stop massive losses.
