How to procede with this freshly cut frag?

So I just came back from a fellow reefer's house where I bought a few pieces he cut on the spot.

One of the frags has 4 nice, but small branches and right below that some dead skeleton with algae growth, then another nice branch and then more dead skeleton with algae. Should I cut off all the dead so that it can encrust faster? or will it grow back over the skeleton and encrust if I mount it where it's dead?

The frags are currently sitting low, acclimating to my system and will be there a few weeks until I figure out where to mount them.

Not sure I follow. Were these pieces that were cut already affected with algae? If so bad deal. If they developed algae in your tank there are bigger issues here.....

It was one piece that a BTA got too close to in his tank. I got it next to nothing and there's 1 1/2" new growth that's healthy.
