HOW TO : QT tank

not if u use water from the display tank along with some type ^^^ of filtration (the filter material filled w/ bacteria) to be in circulation with the qt water by means of a powerfilter of some kind.

Using water from the display will not hurt but it will not affect the cycle to any extent (bacteria are not free floating) The power sponge filter in your sump/refuge for a few weeks prior will help a lot.

Failure to have a properly cycled qt tank is probaby the biggest point of failure I bet.

Even in an emergency, you can fire up the qt tank, monitor the ammonia and as soon as it gets out of hand, run water changes from your display to your qt tank, add the makeup water to the display tank. Sort of a pain but it works

Would I be able to reuse the sponge after a quarantine or would I need to replace it if the fish quarantined showed signs of disease or I used a treatment?

On a side note, NEVER place the filter media back into the display tank after QT is over. This can introduce all sorts of baddies. Make sure that you sterilize the filter media very well before you add it back to the display to be re-cultured.

If you use any copper based treatments, the sponge can not go back into the sump at a later date to be repopulated with bacteria.

Disease is not so much an issue as the sponge can be dried out and also bleached to kill off any bad stuff. If a fish makes it through qt without any issues, I would see no reason not to reuse the sponge.

I personally would pitch any sponge that was subject to any treatment that contained copper.

As for antibiotics, I am not sure but they probably do not pose much risk if the sponge is flushed well. (in other words I have reused them without issue, just not sure if it was a smart thing to do)

Be sure to use seperate equipment for your quarantine and keep them away from your main tanks stuff, such as siphons, nets, towls, basters, etc just in case something in the quarantine has a disease or whatever, you wont accidentally be transfering them over like i did :D
