how to remove clam

if the clam is attached to a rock how do i get it off? cut the rock? cut the fibers?

if you have to move him and there is no way to take the rock. you have to cut the byssal thread as far from the clam as possible using a sharp knife or razor.

Holy cow be careful! I have tugged and scraped with my fingers--I haven't ever sliced it. I hope I never have to try that!!!

Slicing the byssal threads will not harm the animal. It will take 12-18 days to re-establish new bissial threads and start growing again. Tugging can actually harm the byssal gland and that can kill the clam.

I end up putting all my clams on a rubble bed when I first get them---and they snatch up a nice piece of rubble----so they always have it attached---and I can move it around if I have to. The piece of rubble usually wedges in to my rockwork pretty easily and I never have to worry about removing it.

I used a toothpick to scrape the threads off of the rock. The Crocea attached to a new rock within 24 hrs. Lucky I guess...
