How can you get rid if these little pests? They are on the glass. And the cleaner magnet wpies them off, but that's only tempoary?

Any ideas?

Where do they come from? LR?

i just battled them little pests twice, i covered the few patches i had with dd epoxy...they had taken over a piece of live rock and choked out the zoo colony on there. i had to remove the rock let it sit in a bucket for a few weeks,i did not give it a real good scrub down...thats how they entered my tank a second time forcing me to use dd epoxy to cover them up.

good luck with you re battle.

Tagging along. Hydroids are starting to pop up in my tank as well.

George81, I'm not very up on short forms, what does the "dd" stand for in "dd epoxy"?

I'd burn the buggers off if I could get the rock out, but as it stands most of my rock has self cemented themselves in place with corline or is otherwise impossible to get out without taking everything apart.

I have also heard that some nudibranchs will consume hydroids. I wonder if there is any truth to that.

I don't think there are any natural predators for hydroids, or at least any that are suitable for a tank (I haven't heard of any though). From what I've read the only real solution is manual removal. Get some tweezers and start picked them off of the rock. If you do it at the same time you do water changes you can syphon the picked off hydroids out of the tank. I have some in my tank now, but they don't cause any problems so I haven't messed with them. Good luck!

What kind of hydroids are they? I had a terrible colonial hydroid (Myronema) infestation. I battled it for over two years. Once a week I was scrubbing the rocks with a toothbrush for a half-hour at a time. They spread so fast that I could hardly keep up with them. I almost gave up on the hobby because of these evil creatures. I read where some people have had luck with Flame Angels and Coral Beauty Angels so I bought a Flame Angel. Within 10 days, he had eaten every hydroid in the tank. Be advised, they do have a tendency to nip at corals. Many of my SPS corals no longer extend their polyps during the daytime because of this... but, it sure beats scrubbing hydroids every week.

The kind I have are the tiny ones with a small round white body and little clear looking white arms (almost like a starfish but thearms on my are very thin and skinny).

Not a picture from my tank but these look EXACTLY like mine!

Hydroid Jellyfish. From what I have read, they are harmless in reefs and seem to come and go. I get them on my glass, but not in numbers to worry about. I just let them be. They do get swiped with my magnet when I clean the glass, but there will be some more on there the next day. I wouldn't worry about them at all.

I have quite a few on my glass!

How did they get in the tank? Through LR?
I just don't understand why they all of a sudden showed up!

No idea how they get in. Probably the same way all the other crazy creatures end up in my tank; live rock, coral and macro algae trading/buying, etc. I have dozens of worms, filter feeders, and other creatures that I certainly didn't go out and buy myself. They just kind of end up in there on their own. If you see something new, try to ID it and see if it is reef safe.
